If you are thinking of getting pregnant or you have already conceived and are wondering about the options you have for health insurance to cover pregnancy related medical expenses, you are not alone. In this fragile economy, with jobs coming and going, not everyone is blessed with a stable job with great benefits that include pregnancy insurance.

In this article we will go over the new opportunities for pregnant women to get pregnancy coverage even if they are already pregnant. In addition to the previously available employers insurance that covers pregnancy, and previously available state insurance such as Medicaid or Healthy Families, which covers pregnancy in families below certain income level, there are two new ways of covering pregnancy expenses that have only become available with the passage of the new health care law of 2010 in the US.

By going over these two ways here, you will be in position to possibly take advantage of these new opportunities even if you don't qualify for employer's insurance, or, if you are currently between jobs, and even if you make too much income to be eligible for the state pregnancy insurance through Medicaid. The two new ways are: using parents insurance if you are under the age of 26, and using federally instituted PCIP plans.

Pregnant and under 26 years old, use parents insurance

If you are under 26 years of age, and one of your parents has a job with health insurance that includes pregnancy benefits, and you are not eligible for your own employers insurance, or you are between jobs, then you may qualify for obtaining health insurance that includes pregnancy care through this parent. You will be considered a dependent on their plan regardless whether you are married, or whether you live with them, or whether they put you as a dependent on their tax return or not. There are some conditions on acceptance, such as open enrollment periods, and associated 30 day windows, so act quickly and inquire with your parent.

Pregnant with pre-existing conditions

If you have pre-existing conditions which preclude you from obtaining individual insurance, then, after six months without health insurance, you are eligible for a federally-funded, and federally-run or state-run PCIP, or pre-existing condition insurance plan. Considered a contradiction in terms by insurance companies, the PCIP will actually offer a high-deductible, low annual maximum, low copays, affordable insurance plan to anyone who can show that, because of the pre-existing condition, has been declined individual insurance, and has been without health insurance for six months.

Depending on your state, the PCIP plans will be run either directly by a federal government, or by an individual state. You can inquire for more information about the PCIP plans through this link: http://pcip.gov.
